I previously had some skepticism because of the anthrax vaccine which was forced on service members around the turn of the century, but was known to have a lot of adverse effects and was also made for not the weaponized strain. So...probably useless and also risky. But I didn't think that extended to like, all of them. It seemed like a war-hype issue. But now that they "did anthrax" for everyone, over a less serious pathogen, with more smoke and cajoling than actual study, I started listening to these "awful antivaxxers". They might go a little too far, I'm not sure yet, but I'm definitely a lot more wary of vaccines generally. I'm starting to regret my childhood series. It wasn't that many in the 70s though.

I wish you'd expand on this, very interesting. It seems to me that FDA has been captured for decades, since its last dozen Commissioners all or almost all went to Board seats at major drug companies. Ever since the Reagan (counter-) revolution brought austerity to research and social programs, the corporate ethos has infected science at the university level. CDC employees make personal profit from vaccines and other patented products, for example. Rather than science and the public interest being the guiding principles, making money is. Does Bill Gates' influence reach back that far?
I'm not an expert of FDA leadership, but certainly, Califf and Gottlieb were conflicted and I've heard things about Hamburg and her husband's business interests, but nothing concrete. the most obvious conflict is Gottlieb moving direct to the Pfizer main board. Gates and his foundation was set up in 2000, to begin on malaria vaccines, but suspect he was active well before that. So, Gates' influence goes back a long way, and his modus operandi has always been based on buying people and power. With Peter Marks and Califf now gone, and RFK Jr at HHS, FDA is scrubbing the decks in our favour...
I was an RN at at a teaching hospital (south of yours) for several decades. Until Covid, every box of surgical masks (no matter the vendor) had a disclaimer: "Does not prevent viral transmission." They were making us wear them in the rooms of pts with respiratory viruses for which there was no specific protocol. I asked 3 different ID docs why, and they all hemmed and hawed--had no data to offer--basically all said that we had to LOOK like we were doing something... Similarly, in the early 90's when HepB shots were instituted routinely at birth I asked several Peds docs why, as the vast majority of mothers are HepB-neg, plus studies have shown that the level of virus in breast milk appears insufficient to cause infection--they also had no data and simply said, "The CDC says so." I've yet to meet a neonate who has unprotected sex or shares needles...why subject every newborn to this when the overwhelming majority are not at risk?
If a leak, one of the main issues is the funding of the research. Work funded by the US government (NIH, DARPA, BARDA, DOD, etc...) being done through shell companies (Eco Health Alliance ) outside of the country to get around restrictions imposed on Gain of Function research.
This is being done under the umbrella of "Dual Use Research ". Since its "illegal" to have an active bioweapons program, the research is being done under the label of medical products.
We don't need YET more studies! All the past studies show that face diapers do diddley squat, and the Cochrane Review confirmed all that. If you believe that face diapers can play any role at all in air transmission of viruses, then you really don't understand anything about biology.
Well, you don't need to convince me.I was just pointing out that there weren't any studies. However, I do recall that in the 1918 flu epidemic where masking was practiced, transmission was lower. Nut there were a lot of other mitigating factors, like people who masked were less like to engage in behaviors that led to transmission.
There have been tons of studies, they're all poor in design or negative in result. This is not an equipoise situation, this is something all science has known for ages. The face diapers don't seal, so it was entirely idiotic, same with all the plexiglass.
I'm deathly afraid that humans have learned nothing, and the next time some silly virus comes out of the woodwork, we're going to be stuck with all this shit once more.

There's a difference between some individual "not knowing" and being oblivious to the state of knowledge in science.

I retired from podiatry in 2022. I always masked in the office, but didn't require it of my patients. Many did, though. I always found it amusing when my obese, heavy breathing patients allowed their masks to drop below their noses.
I live in eastern Pennsylvania, near Philly. I hang out with a very liberal, folk dancing and music crowd. We went above and beyond with Covid mitigation. Dances were canceled right away. They resumed around June of 2021 but were canceled immediately upon the first "breakthrough" cases. We had vax requirements for years. We still have testing requirements before big events. On the eastern seaboard we are blessed (or cursed) with know-it-all public health nurses and similar types who naturally settled into the role of local Covid czars for our dances. This is what happens when you have too many PhD's. Meanwhile, just a few hours to the west, in Lancaster County, near where I live, people spoke of the "plandemic:" Similar attitudes prevail in California and the Pacific northwest. Politics of course follows the same patterns.
PS: Some of the ever enterprising Amish people sewed hand-made face masks to sell to the rest of us, masks they never wore themselves, of course.
PPS: We've been having a huge measles outbreak here in south-central PA. I made sure, on my doctor's advice, to get serologic testing and found that I had lost my immunity, so I got re-vaxed. For whatever reasons, though, no one in the folk dance world has been requiring testing and vaccination for this truly communicable and deadly disease.
