IMO, ChatGPT is not responsible for that woman's death. Those who use AI technology must understand that it is a TOOL to use with caution. In addition, ChatGPT has a disclaimer stating that it can make MISTAKES. AI is not a reason to ignore or bypass one's common sense and critical thinking skills! We must question and challenge everything, including AI!!!
You're blaming the symptom. If people didn't use ANY and ALL situation as a reason to sue, the number of lawyers would drop precipitously. The woman killing herself is tragic. But the family going after blood money is a tragedy too. Unless they stated that all monies from the lawsuit will go to a non-profit and they already signed that contract - who am I kidding.
no..... is the simple answer. A caver and a climber. I like canoeing. I like sailing. If I die sailing or canoeing or caving, is it because I asked ChatGPT for some advice about where the best place was to sail, and they told me the Western Isles of Scotland. I then hit a storm. That's my responsibility, not ChatGPT's. Yes, I've lost friends caving and climbing in accidents. It happens.
Essentially, ChatGPT is just a tool, and it will tell you the answer that you keep on pushing it for. Simple as that. If anything, I think ChatGPT is actually far too risk-averse, and I keep on telling off my own ChatGPT for that reason.
I'm interested in collecting and foraging wild mushrooms, and ChatGPT keeps on telling me how dangerous that is. I've been doing it for 20 years. I know exactly what I'm doing.
Well if we could get timely appointments with our doctors, believed they actually cared for us, believed they were honest with us, so many of us wouldn’t be getting advice from Chat. I use Chat all the time, it directs me in a very conservative way. This is a result of the medical community lying to us, continuing to lie to us. They lost our trust during COVID. They will never get mine back. So no Chat is not at fault.
Great article! If you don't know how to handle the questions you are asking, then don't ask them. I took myself off of SSRI's over 20 years ago when I went through my divorce and felt ready to be done with the SSRI's, but I wanted to do it more slowly than was standard practice at the time. I read up on it and I successfully got myself off and have never needed them again. Whatever happened to 'my body my choice?'...
The chat didn't make her do it, even if it told her how to do it. Same is true for crimes, AI can tell you how to make a bomb, and then you bomb something, you are the criminal, not AI.
By that logic, we shouldn’t argue against medications that fraudulently overrepresent their efficacy and instead just blame doctors and patients who fall for the lies.
The AI industry has backed countless studies and countless breathless reports by journalists re: how good they are at practicing medicine. Quite similar dynamic to what pharma companies do with duds.
You are applying different standards to AI companies for behavior that is very similar to what you criticized drug companies (for years).
I don't understand the inference that people and their families should should accept accountability for their own choices. And, this wild, immoral statement that an American cannot sue (especially when the respondent has deep pockets) when they get exactly what they chose.
If people would take these statements by Vinay seriously, we would have people reading and learning about themselves and the institutions that are responsible for their happiness, raising their children, whether their football team wins, their food intake and the kinds of food they choose, their looting, shoplifting and other criminal activities, the street drugs available, and a host of other life choices that we should be allowed (if not mandated) to outsource to others.

You're assuming people have common sense and critical thinking skills. Those skills seem to be lacking in many
You make an excellent point!
Lawyers are destroying our society.
Greed in lawyers, and anyone else.

There is a huge problem in that no one wants to be held responsible for anything. It's always someone else's fault!

Have you considered consulting a psychiatrist to address your paranoia and lack of understanding of your own agency?
You think the medical industry has been honest with the public?
Read my comment, douchie. Stop deflecting.

All excellent questions. Unfortunately, in 2026, individual responsibility is just not expected anymore…
I miss America that used to tout self reliance, resilience, perseverance, and accountability.

"The AI industry has backed countless studies and countless breathless reports ... "
OK, citations to authority if you want to be believed rather than being taken for being an internet troll.
"By that logic..." Ah, no, you are comparing apples to oranges.

Big Sister is not happy.
